NEC Winter Internship Programme 2026
Government internship in Shillong
The North Eastern Council Secretariat has opened its winter internship registration, with a deadline of 30 November 2026. The current notice revising topics and opening registration was digitally signed on 27 October 2026. The internship offers exposure to the work of a regional planning and development organisation under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Who is eligible?
The policy covers students at recognised Indian universities or institutions in relevant fields, including social sciences, economics, development studies, environmental studies, public administration and engineering. Undergraduate applicants must have completed or appeared in second-year/fourth-semester examinations and have at least 55% or equivalent in Class 12. Postgraduate applicants must have completed or appeared in first-year/second-semester examinations; postgraduate/research applicants need at least 55% or equivalent in graduation.
Recent graduates and seat provisions
Candidates who have taken their final exam or completed graduation/postgraduation and are awaiting higher-study admission may also be considered. This route requires at least 60% cumulative marks through the application date and no more than six months between the month of final-result declaration and the desired internship month. The policy reserves 50% of seats for students from the North Eastern Region; remaining places are available to other Indian students under the stated criteria. It also provides for 50% of seats for women as far as possible.
Duration, work mode and costs
The maximum duration is two months, with at least one month compulsorily in person at NEC in Shillong. Dates depend on academic calendars and organisational requirements. This is not a fully remote internship. The policy creates no financial liability for NEC and does not provide a stipend. Approved field visits may receive TA/DA; that possibility should not be presented as a monthly stipend. Interns must bring their own laptop. NEC provides working space, internet and other necessities as determined by sector heads.
Areas of work and selection
The current topics span agriculture and allied work, tourism, irrigation and flood control, education and human resources, science and technology, transport, health, communications, monitoring, library/knowledge management, finance and administration. Select an area supported by your studies and interests. The policy gives academic merit a 40% weight, subject relevance 20%, interest in North East development 20% and computer literacy 20%. Interviews may be held in person or by video. Places depend on resources and project requirements; the policy’s maximum simultaneous capacity is 36, not a promise of 36 vacancies in this winter call.
How to apply and what to prepare
Use the exact NEC-linked ServicePlus application route. The login/register page identifies the service as “Application for Internship Programme in NEC.” Prepare your resume, Statement of Purpose, academic transcripts and the documents requested for your chosen field. Clearly indicate your area of interest. The policy permits only one internship application per financial year and sets an application window from six months in advance to no later than one month before the desired internship month; follow the current winter deadline as well.
NOC, attendance and completion
Selected applicants must provide original marksheets and the institution’s NOC at joining. The NOC must confirm that no course requires classroom attendance during the internship period. Interns need at least 75% attendance and daily in/out records. Below that threshold, the policy does not allow extension or issue an experience certificate. A final report, assessment and satisfactory completion are part of the programme. The sector head issues the completion certificate.
Before submitting
Read the current topics and complete policy, including confidentiality and authorised-data-use obligations. The original call, signed notice, governing policy and application portal were checked on 3 November 2026. The earlier policy’s date does not replace the current winter call’s 27 October 2026 issue date.
