OIST Research Internship — Spring 2027

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is accepting applications for its Spring 2027 Research Internship round. This is a laboratory-based opportunity in Okinawa, Japan, for eligible students and graduates who want research experience in science and technology. It is not a work-from-home internship or a general software-development vacancy.

The placement offers a working-day allowance and practical support for travel and accommodation. However, applying is not free: OIST charges a non-refundable application fee. Applicants should assess their academic fit, availability and application costs before submitting.

Research areas and the placement

OIST's programme covers physics, chemistry, mathematical and computational sciences, marine science, neuroscience, molecular and developmental biology, environmental and ecological science, and quantum science. Applicants should consult the current faculty-and-project availability table rather than assume that every unit has places in the Spring 2027 round.

A host laboratory depends on the proposed research, the applicant's academic background, funding and available space. The availability page says admission numbers are limited and a listed faculty member may still be unable to accept an intern. Projects can change, and the faculty determines suitable work in discussion with the intern after acceptance.

OIST asks applicants to identify relevant faculty through the application process, not seek advance approval or submit applications by contacting professors personally. This is a research placement, not a promise of admission to a subsequent PhD programme.

Who can apply?

  • Bachelor's students in their final two years, including those who will reach that stage by the proposed internship start.
  • Master's students in any year, and people who have completed a bachelor's or master's degree.
  • Applicants from institutions in Japan or overseas whose academic background suits the desired research unit.

Students who are still enrolled need approval from their home institution. Current and graduated PhD students are not eligible for this programme. Applicants must be able to research and collaborate in English, but an IELTS or TOEFL score is not compulsory for the research internship. An optional score can be uploaded.

Research interns belonging to a Japanese university or institution must arrange the insurance coverage specified by OIST. Indian applicants should read the same official eligibility rules and travel requirements carefully; being an overseas applicant does not remove academic or documentation requirements.

Allowance, travel and accommodation

The allowance is JPY 2,400 for each working day. This is not a published fixed monthly salary, and Jobsii has not converted it into a guaranteed rupee amount. OIST also lists one direct round-trip air ticket, furnished accommodation on or off campus funded by OIST or the host research unit, a shuttle-bus pass, and assistance with a Certificate of Eligibility for the visa application and registration procedures.

These benefits apply to the intern only, not accompanying dependents or family. The admissions FAQ also says research interns cannot take outside part-time work. Funding support should therefore not be confused with an unrestricted opportunity to earn additional income in Japan.

Application documents and fee

Prepare the application in English through the online system. The official document list includes academic transcripts and completed diplomas, or an enrollment certificate if a diploma is not yet available; a current CV; identification/passport documents; and a recent front-facing photograph. Unofficial transcripts may be accepted, and non-English transcripts need an English explanation.

The statement of purpose must stay within 250 words and 1,500 characters. Explain what you want to achieve at OIST and how the placement relates to your future plans. OIST requires one to three English recommendation letters from professorial-level faculty; letters from postdoctoral researchers or other laboratory members do not qualify. At least one letter must reach the system before the application can be submitted.

The JPY 5,000 fee is non-refundable, and personal financial circumstances do not qualify for a fee waiver. A valid passport is needed for travel; the official instructions allow another government-issued identification document if a passport is unavailable when applying. Follow the portal's current upload requirements rather than relying on a generic document checklist.

How to apply

  1. Read the official OIST Research Internship programme description and application information.
  2. Check the faculty and project availability for April–September 2027 and identify suitable units.
  3. Review the current eligibility, document requirements, fee and selection schedule.
  4. Use the linked official application portal, create or access your account, and complete the Spring 2027 application.
  5. Arrange recommendations, review the completed form and submit by the deadline. Saving a draft is not final submission.

Jobsii preparation advice

Before paying, compare your coursework and research experience with the units that can host interns in your intended period. In your CV, distinguish techniques you have used independently from those you are still learning. Ask a suitable recommender early and check the invitation status, because a missing letter can prevent submission.

These are preparation suggestions, not extra OIST eligibility conditions. Do not wait until the last minute or mistake the Japan-time deadline for an 11:59 p.m. deadline in India. Information was checked against OIST's official admissions FAQ and programme pages on 4 October 2026; recheck the live instructions before applying.
