Qualifications: both degrees are required
Applicants need a four-year bachelor’s degree in Civil, Agricultural or Geomatics Engineering and a two-year master’s degree in Civil, Agricultural or allied Engineering. The master’s specialisation must be Hydrology, Hydraulics, Water Resources, Irrigation Water Management, Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, or an equivalent field. A general interest in research or an unrelated qualification does not replace the specified degree combination.
Candidates should have passed GATE. The notice provides an alternative: a candidate may clear the national-level selection process that IIT Madras will conduct specifically for this announcement. The alternative should be read as a selection requirement, rather than an unconditional waiver. The portal displays zero years of experience, while the detailed notice provides the controlling qualification and selection conditions.
Desirable expertise
The department gives preference to expertise in GIS, including QGIS and ArcGIS; field hydrology and measurements; and hydrologic modelling. Named tools include Mike+, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and SWMM. These are desirable areas in the notice. They should not be turned into additional mandatory qualifications or a guarantee of shortlisting.
Pay, location and appointment
The advertised payment is ₹37,000 plus 27% HRA per month. The initial engagement is six months, with a possible extension based on performance. This is a purely contractual research position. Completing the contract does not confer a right to extension, regularisation or permanent employment at the institute. The work is based at IIT Madras in Chennai; remote work is not advertised.
Nationality and other conditions
The general instructions require Indian citizenship, with the stated provisions for persons who migrated from Pakistan intending to settle permanently in India and subjects of Nepal. Those applicants need the prescribed Government of India eligibility certificate for appointment and satisfactory proof of having applied for it. Applicants in these categories should read the complete original clause before applying.
Eligibility in every respect is assessed on the online closing date. The verified announcement does not disclose a numerical upper age limit or an application-fee amount. Applicants should use the current official notice and portal for any clarification rather than infer an age limit or claim that the application is free.

The system accepts one application per registered email for an advertisement. It does not permit editing or reverting a submitted application, and duplicate applications for the same post can lead to rejection. If the portal allows several positions within an advertisement, select the intended positions before submitting; this does not permit repeat applications.
Selection and preparation
IIT Madras may shortlist candidates using qualifications, relevant experience and academic achievements, and may decide the screening or testing method. Meeting minimum conditions or receiving a call letter does not guarantee selection. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. The institute verifies documents and can reject false or unsupported information.
Applicants already working on an IIT Madras project must apply through the proper channel or produce the required NOC at document verification, test or interview. As Jobsii preparation advice, organise the degree and specialisation evidence and examples of hydrology, GIS or modelling work that you can explain. This advice does not add an employer condition.
